Cooperation between companies of Russia and Ukraine together with the Ministry of Defence of Russia and the space agencies of Russia and Ukraine over the period 1992-2003 based on the technology of liquidated strategic missiles SS-18 established space-rocket system "Dnepr", designed to launch spacecrafts.
A number of scientific researches and pre design efforts preceded the decision to create the launch system. These works resulted that the most perspective and cost-effective solution for spacecraft orbiting is space-rocket systems based on heavy intercontinental ballistic missile SS-18 with minimal modifications of the original missle.
Work on creation and commercial exploitation of the space-rocket system based on strategic missiles SS-18 for spacecraft launching was assigned to the ISC “Kosmotras” and became known as “Dnepr” program.
|Launches of "Dnepr" LV are carried out from two spaceports: the Baikonur Cosmodrome (Kazakhstan) and the Yasny Cosmodrome (Russian Federation).|
Establishment and implementation of the "Dnepr" program brought together leading space-rocket companies of Russia and Ukraine, such as FSUE "Central and Scientific Research Institute of Machine-building", "Design Office of Special Machine Building", "Design Office of Transport Machine Building", JSC "ASKOND", JSC "Corporation Rosobschemash", Yuzhnoye SDO, SE "Yuzhny Machine Building Plant named after A.M.Makarov" and Research and Production Enterprise Khartron-Arkos of Ukraine.
SE "PA UMZ named after A.M.Makarov" contributes to the program the following: production of the "Dnepr" launch vehicle on the basis of the strategic missile SS-18.
